In-Depth Program Profiles
Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT)

BPT graduates work in musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiopulmonary, paediatric, geriatric, and sports rehabilitation settings.
BPT is a 5-year undergraduate program: 4 years of academic learning followed by a 1-year clinical internship. Eligibility is 12th pass with 40% in all subjects individually; English mandatory; minimum 50% in PCB. NEET is not required for AY 2026-27.

Bachelor of Optometry (B.Optom)
Optometry is the allied and healthcare profession focused on examining eyes, prescribing corrective lenses, detecting eye diseases, and managing non-surgical eye care. Optometrists work alongside ophthalmologists across hospitals, eye-care chains, and independent clinics. India faces a notable workforce gap in this field - an AIIMS Delhi survey published in 2025 mapped 17,849 optometrists at secondary and tertiary levels nationally, well below the Vision 2020 target of three allied professionals per ophthalmologist.
B.Optom is a 5-year program: 4 years of academic learning plus a 1-year clinical internship. Eligibility is 12th pass with 40% in all subjects individually; minimum 50% in PCB/PCM. NEET is not required.
Total program fees range from ₹2 lakh at government institutions to around ₹6–8 lakh at private universities. Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS)
Medical Laboratory Science (formerly MLT) covers the diagnostic backbone of clinical care - haematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, histopathology, immunology, and molecular diagnostics. B.MLS graduates run laboratory tests, operate analytical instruments, and produce reports that physicians rely on for clinical decisions.
The Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS) is the recognized UG degree in this field, a 4-year program structured as 3 years of academic learning followed by a 1-year clinical internship. Eligibility is 12th pass with 40% in all subjects individually; PCB mandatory. NEET is not required.
DMLT (Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology) is a separate diploma route that sits outside the NCAHP UG framework. Students seeking the regulated 4-year UG pathway should look at B.MLS programs at universities offering NCAHP-aligned curricula.
Total program fees range from ₹1.5 lakh at government colleges to ₹5–7 lakh at private universities. Indicative annual salary is ₹2.5–5.0 LPA per Salary.com data for medical laboratory technologists in India, 2026. For a fuller breakdown, see the MLS course guide.
Bachelor of Anaesthesia & Operation Theatre Technology (B.AOTT)
B.AOTT - formerly offered as separate B.Sc. Anaesthesia and B.Sc. Operation Theatre Technology streams at many universities - combines training in operation-theatre management with anaesthesia assistance. Graduates work alongside surgeons and anaesthesiologists, manage sterilisation protocols, prepare instruments, monitor patient vitals during procedures, and run post-operative theatre turnover.
The typical UG structure is 4 years (3 academic years plus a 1-year clinical internship), with eligibility requiring 12th pass with 40% in all subjects individually; PCB/PCM mandatory; and no NEET requirement. NCAHP has notified the Anesthesia and Operation Theatre Technology curriculum (notice dated 29.10.2025).
Total program fees range from ₹50,000 at government institutes to ₹3–6 lakh at private universities. Indicative annual salary for OT technicians in India is ₹2.0–3.1 LPA entry; ₹3.2–4.5 LPA mid per AmbitionBox data for operation theatre technicians in India, 2026, rising into specialized roles in cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, and transplant procedures.
For deeper coverage, see the B.AOTT course guide.
Bachelor of Medical Radiology and Imaging Technology (B.MRIT)
B.MRIT trains students to operate diagnostic imaging equipment - X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, mammography, fluoroscopy, and nuclear medicine imaging - position patients accurately, produce diagnostic-quality images, and support radiologists in patient care. India's diagnostic imaging market is projected to reach USD 2.4 billion by 2033 (IMARC Group, 2024), driving sustained demand for B.MRIT graduates.
The typical UG structure is 4 years (3 academic years plus a 1-year clinical internship), with eligibility requiring 12th pass with 40% in all subjects individually; PCB mandatory; and no NEET requirement. Medical Radiology and Imaging Technology is regulated under the NCAHP Act 2021; the NCAHP curriculum for B.MRIT is still pending and universities follow their own admissions and curricula pending standardisation.
Total program fees range from ₹1.5 lakh at government institutions to ₹6–9 lakh at private universities. Indicative annual salary is ₹2.0–3.0 LPA entry; ₹3.1–4.5 LPA mid per AmbitionBox data for radiographers in India, 2026, with senior CT/MRI specialists earning higher.

How to Choose the Right Healthcare Degree for You
Several factors shape which allied and healthcare degree fits best - how much direct patient contact you want, whether you took PCB or PCM in 12th, how long you are willing to study before starting work, and where you see yourself practising (hospitals, diagnostic chains, eye-care centres, surgical settings, or rehabilitation clinics).
The five degrees in this guide overlap in meaningful ways. Patient-facing clinical work appears across BPT and B.Optom, but so do elements of diagnostics and technology in B.MLS, B.MRIT, and B.AOTT. A PCM background may open B.Optom and B.AOTT at some institutions, while PCB keeps all five options open. Program length ranges from four years (B.MLS, B.MRIT, B.AOTT) to five (BPT, B.Optom), all including a clinical internship.
Because multiple degrees can suit the same interest profile, the most reliable next step is to compare NCAHP alignment, internship structure, and total fees at your shortlisted universities - or talk to our expert counsellors for guidance matched to your background and goals.
