The Changing Role of Government in Healthcare
The government has now started identifying and training over 1,17,000 people for various healthcare roles which include — general duty assistants, emergency medical technicians, home healthcare-aid and medical equipment maintenance professionals, and medical laboratory technicians.
The council set up by the National Skill Development Corporation, has tied up with 400 training partners to prepare abridged courses comprising a three-week classroom program, followed by three months of on-the-job training for over 1 lakh healthcare workers.

How to Step into the Healthcare Sector?
- One can join the allied healthcare workforce and serve the community after completing one of the numerous courses listed such as Diploma in Hospital Administration (DHA), Diploma in Medical Lab Technology (DMLT), Diploma in Medical Imaging Technology (DMIT), Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology (DOTT) and many more paramedical courses that are equally worthwhile.
- As this pandemic has got the world au courant with Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT) who have been tirelessly conducting detailed medical laboratory testing including the COVID-19 RT-PCR tests along with the routine glucose, cholesterol tests, and so on, these behind the scene technicians have become our frontline warriors today.
- MLTs are currently carrying out up to 70 per cent of patients’ laboratory testing enabling the physicians to provide an accurate diagnosis and plan their treatment.
- A study concluded that 94 per cent of the objective medical data in the patient record comes from medical laboratory technicians.
- To see yourself as a health professional involved in diagnosing, facilitating treatment, and helping prevent diseases through the use of clinical laboratory tests, you can choose to enrol yourself in one of the following:
- Diploma in Medical Lab Technology (DMLT) is a one-year program and includes five months of internship.
- Advanced Diploma in Medical Lab Technology (ADMLT) is a two-year program and includes 6 months of internship.
- Bachelors in Medical Lab Technology (BMLT) which is a three-year program with six months to one year of internship.
To be a part of the above-mentioned programs, one must meet the eligibility criteria of having passed class 12 with at least 50% score in Biology, Physics, and Chemistry as main subjects from a recognized board/university.
